Observation of pollination and fertilization in the new mandarin cultivar Wuzibayueju (Citrus reticulata Blanco).

The pollen-tube growth was compared between self-pollinated [Wuzibayueju(Citrus reticulata)×Wuzibayueju],and cross-pollinated [Wuzibayueju×Bayueju(C.reticulata)].The self-and cross-compatibility of Wuzibayueju was observed under a UV microscope by the fluorescence of the callose deposits of pollen tubes.The results showed that the growth of self-and cross-pollen tubes in the stigma,style and ovary were normal,and they could enter the embryo sac and fertilized.Average seed number of self-and cross-pollinated fruit was both above 15.The results suggested that Wuzibayueju was self-compatible,and self-incompatibility was not the seedless reason of Wuzibayueju.
