The objective of the following study is to study the chemical constituents of Berchemia lineata and their activitivies. In our investigation, 16 compounds were isolated and purified by gel column chromatography and reverse-phase silica gel and ODS column chromatography as well as preprative HPLC. The above compounds were identified as: quercetin (1), kaempferol (2), isorhamnetin (3), emodin (4), chrysophanol (5), physcion (6), fernenol (7), emodin-8-O-beta-D-glucoside (8), emodin-3-alpha-L-rhamnoside (9), quercetin 3-O-alpha-L-arabinofuranoside (10), kaempferol 3-O-alpha-L-arabinofuranoside (11), quercetin-3-O-beta-D-glucoside (12), quercitrin (13), isorhamnetin 3-O-beta-D-glucoside (14), narcissin (15), kaempferol 3-O-beta-D-(6-O-trans-p-hydroxycinnamyl) glucoside (16). Their structures were determined by spectroscopic analyses and chemical methods. Compounds 8, 10, 11, 14, 15, 16 are isolated from this plant for the first time. Accoding to the inhibitory activities on xanthine oxidase (XOD) and lipoxygenase (LOX), the IC50 values of XOD inhibitory activity of compound 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 were15, 84, 47, 45, 53.6 mu M, respectively. The IC50 values of LOX inhibitory activity of compound 1, 5, 6 were 37, 100, 177 mu M, respectively. Thus, B. Lineata could protect against free radical-mediated damage and anti-inflammation.
