3D City Map Reconstruction from LEO Communication Satellite SNR Measurements

Three-dimensional (3D) city maps have many applications in a wide range of areas, however, the current 3D map reconstruction process is costly and labor-intensive. Some studies have verified that using passive environment sensors for automatic mapping enables the reduction of map reconstruction cost and human labor utilization, yet the finite data collected by passive sensors limit the reconstruction scope and precision. Inspired by the rapid development and bright prospect of low earth orbit (LEO) satellite communication technology, we propose a 3D city map reconstruction scheme based on signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) measurements from LEO communication satellites, which can solve the problem of finite data collection issue of the traditional passive sensors and realize global 3D map reconstruction and updating. In contrast to previous researches, this paper is the first to apply LEO satellite communication system as passive sensor for 3D city map reconstruction. Based on the different impact of the diverse buildings on the line-of-sight (LOS) signal transmission, the height of buildings can be derived from satellite-user LOS links' spatial geometry characteristics. Numerical results illustrate that using SNR measurements from LEO communication satellites can achieve large-scale real-time 3D map reconstruction in urban scenario.
