UTILIZING ADVANCE DEMAND INFORMATION IN PROJECT DELIVERY CHAIN A case study at industrial valve manufacturer

摘要
Literature of supply chain management (SCM) emphasizes the importance of sharing demand information. In project delivery chains, i.e. supply chains for investment projects, the information sharing is especially important because demand for projects deliveries is sporadic and lumpy in nature. Sharing advance demand information (ADI) allows time for the manufacturers to reconcile the lumps in demand with their production planning. Simulation studies suggest that ADI has a positive effect on delivery performance. In this longitudinal study, empirical evidence is collected from an implementation of an ADI database in a project delivery chain of process industry equipment. The collected data suggests that ADI indeed has a positive effect on the accuracy of production planning. However, ADI's effects on delivery performance are not supported. Explanations for the quantitative results are provided on the basis of inclusive interview data. The main challenges of executing ADI-based plans seem to be: developing appropriate practices for planning according to the information, conserving the information during the execution of production, and meeting the preconditions for utilizing the information in procurement.
