Relationship of BMI and WC with both blood glucose and blood pressure among residents aged 18-69 years in Bincheng district in 2011

Objective To determine the relationship of body mass index(BMI)and waist circumference(WC)with both blood glucose and blood pressure among residents aged 18-69 years in Bincheng district,to provide reference in preventing obesity-related diseases.Methods A total of 1 298 residents aged 18-69 years were randomly recruited from 12 villages/neighborhood communities.Height,weight,WC,blood glucose level and blood pressure were all assessed.Results The overall overweight and obesity rates among residents surveyed were 34.51% and 16.33%,with the highest of 40.13% and 17.20% among middle-aged population group.As both BMI and WC increased,the blood glucose level and blood pressure showed upward trend,thus the prevalence of diabetes and hypertension went higher.There was a significant difference between each group(P0.01).Conclusions Middle-aged person is more likely to be overweight or obese,which increases the risk of suffering diabetes and hypertension.Therefore,the control of obesity and abdominal obesity has great significance in preventing obesity-related health problem.
