Oxygen Diffusion in Alumina. Application to Synthetic and Thermally Grown Al2O3

Oxygen diffusion coefficients were determined in thermally grown alumina scales as well as in synthetic alumina. Two stage oxidation experiments using O-18(2)/O-16(2) were performed on undoped and Y-doped materials. The oxygen isotope profiles were collected by Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry and yielded to determine the effective, bulk and grain boundary oxygen diffusion coefficients. The values obtained on thermally grown alumina scales were compared to those determined on synthetic alumina. The influence of the introduction of yttrium on the oxygen difftision coefficients was discussed.
