•Neuronal insulin regulates central monoamine homeostasis via down-stream kinase Akt.•Neuronal ablation of p-Akt at Ser473 increases cortical 5-HT1A and -2A receptors.•Elimination of p-Akt at Ser473 changes 5-HT receptor subtype signaling and behaviors.•We identified a novel link between Akt dysfunction (diabetes) and mental illness.
