•We characterize gene expression and DNA-binding of PPARα in human hepatocytes.•Only half of regulated genes show PPARα binding.•Directly bound genes include fatty acid metabolism as well as a greater variety of biological processes.•We developed two bioinformatic strategies to visualize PPARα network dose response.
