•Pulmonary stretch receptor activity was examined with simulated dives in alligators.•Dives were simulated by prolonged (1min) lung inflation or deflation.•Inflation inhibited and deflation potentiated post-dive receptor activity, respectively.•Ventilation with hypercapnia or hypoxia modified post-dive receptor activity.
