Effects of prolonged lung inflation or deflation on pulmonary stretch receptor discharge in the alligator (Alligator mississippiensis).

•Pulmonary stretch receptor activity was examined with simulated dives in alligators.•Dives were simulated by prolonged (1min) lung inflation or deflation.•Inflation inhibited and deflation potentiated post-dive receptor activity, respectively.•Ventilation with hypercapnia or hypoxia modified post-dive receptor activity.
