Exploring age differences in visual working memory capacity: is there a contribution of memory for configuration?

•Visual working memory capacity increases during childhood, but why?•One possible factor is the use of the spatial configuration of items.•We tested memory for arrays of colored shapes with and without configuration cues.•Children in early elementary school years were helped by configuration cues at test.•Configuration did not, however, account for all of the development of capacity.
