A response to "Comments on torsional testing".
VETERINARY AND COMPARATIVE ORTHOPAEDICS AND TRAUMATOLOGY(2015)
摘要
Dear Editor-in-Chief, Thank you for giving us an opportunity to respond to the comments of Prof. G. Smith about his concerns about the methodology used for testing of implant constructs in some research papers published in VCOT recently (1). We fully agree with Prof. Smith’s view and thank him for educating us about the torsion testing methods in which the torsional axis is unconstrained, allowing it to self-centre or shift when the test specimens are loaded. This may be particularly true for asymmetrical fixation constructs. In our study, we have tested external fixator constructs, which are more symmetrically distributed about the torsional axis of the mechanical testing machine, the inherent torsional axis approximating the instrument imposed torsional axis, which we believe is acceptable (2). Nevertheless, with the facilities available for performing the test using a method in which the torsional axis is unconstrained, the results may be more accurate and simulate natural clinical condition better.
