•Freezing combined with modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) of GRS was studied.•Incorporating vacuum packaged and sulphite-treated ones enabled robust comparisons.•Measured qualities statistically differed across treatment groups with frozen storage.•Combining freezing and MAP can replace sulphite treatments and with promising results.
