•The Curiosity rover acquired and examined its first in-situ sample at the Rocknest deposit.•Partial use of this material was to demonstrate organic cleanliness of the sampling hardware.•First time engineering activities of the MSL sampling (SA/SPaH) hardware were accomplished.
