Contrasting the attitudes of farmers and the general public regarding the ‘multifunctional’ role of the agricultural sector

•Study compared the views of farmers with the general public.•Both farmers and the general public had similarly high levels of concern for the environment.•There were important differences in attitudes for some environmental issues.•Factors such as age, income, place of residence and presence of children have a significant influence in individual attitudes towards environmental issues.
