Coordination of the cortisol and testosterone responses: A dual axis approach to understanding the response to social status threats

•Within-person coupling of cortisol and testosterone responses were examined.•Cortisol and testosterone tended to rise and fall together for men and children.•When one’s performance is evaluated, coordinated changes occur in these hormones.•Men high in anxiety and children high in negative affectivity had stronger coupling.•A coordinated response may have adaptive functions when dealing with status threats.
