High proinsulin levels are associated with all-cause and cardiovascular mortality. It is unclear whether they are associated with cancer mortality. Proinsulin binds with and activates insulin receptor isoform A, which itself has been found in cancer cells and mediates the growth effects of pro-insulin-like growth factor II.
