•Silk fibroin was decorated with tetracycline in aqueous solution to impart positive charge.•Cationic silk fibroin was deposited on titanium substrate as cathode via electrophoretic deposition.•Osteoblast-like cells achieved acceptable cell affinity on the cationic silk fibroin coatings.•Tetracycline was responsible for the antibacterial activity of cationic silk fibroin coatings.
