Comprehension of iconic gestures by chimpanzees and human children

•We examine the role of iconicity in disambiguating referential gestures in children.•We present the first study on comprehension of iconic gestures in chimpanzees.•Children spontaneously recognize iconic gestures as referential acts.•Iconicity helps chimpanzees to associate the gesture with a location over time.
