•An analytical method for voltage sag mitigation using DVR is proposed.•Proposed structure and control scheme of DVR is discussed.•The DVR is capable of improving voltage profile and reduction of number of voltage sag.•Experimental setup for generating online harmonics data is presented.•Methodology is applied in a real Indian distribution system.
