Mixing potential of a surface-mounted solar-powered water mixer (SWM) for controlling cyanobacterial blooms

•We evaluated water column mixing by a solar-powered mixer to control cyanobacteria.•Flow dynamics, temperature profiles, and variable fluorescence ratio were compared.•The impact of the solar-powered mixer is highly localized.•The mixing induced is insufficient for cyanobacteria control in larger water bodies.
