cm2; CHOL=12.8±0.9S/cm2).HRP flux showed a non-significant trend towards increased macromolecular permeability in CORT implanted rats (1.00±0.25 ngHRP/hr/cm2 ) compared to CHOL controls (0.56±0.20 ngHRP/hr/cm2 ).In rats implanted with CORT on the amygdala there was a significant inhibition of the EFS-induced Isc compared to CHOL controls (mean CORT=17.5±4.7 μA/cm2; mean CHOL=33.5±15.5 μA/cm2; p<0.05).Summary: In a rodent model, elevation of amygdala CORT increases colonic epithelial conductance and attenuates active epithelial transport induced by submucosal nerve stimulation compared to CHOL treated controls.Conclusion: Our findings demonstrate that the amygdala plays an important role in colonic barrier function and may be in part responsible for stress-induced increases in IBS symptomatology.
