•Agrobacterium-mediated transformation of pea has been developed.•T4 generation of transgenic pea plants was confirmed at molecular level.•Insect resistant transgenic pea expressing cry1Ac protein has been confirmed.•Total larval mortality was observed on the transgenic plants compared with control.
