•We studied the Trp–Trp dipeptide via ps and fs resolved fluorescence spectroscopy.•The quantum yields and lifetime of Trp–Trp dipeptide are smaller than single Trp.•Candidate mechanisms are discussed.•Electrons transfer and the two Trp residues interaction are proposed.
