Characterization of D2 tool steel friction surfaced coatings over low carbon steel

•Solid state coating by friction surfacing method.•D2 tool steel is coated over relatively softer low carbon steel.•Defect free interface between tool steel coating and low carbon steel substrate.•D2 coatings exhibited higher hardness and good wear resistance.•Highly refined martensitic microstructure in the coating.
