Prediction of Reinforcement Tension Produced by Arch Action in RC Beams

A discussion of a paper with the aforementioned title by D. Kim, W. Kim, and R.N. White, published in this journal (Volume 124, Number 6, June 1998), is presented. The discussers point out that the force flow is not considered in detail in the paper and that the influence of stirrup reinforcement ratio is not accounted for in the formulation put forth by the writers. Furthermore, they claim that the authors' empirical relationships lack generality and are not superior to existing approaches. Discussion is followed by closure from the authors.
