Response of N 2 O emission to water and nitrogen addition in temperate typical steppe soil in Inner Mongolia, China

•Nitrogen and water addition both significantly increased soil N2O emissions.•N2O effluxes were significantly affected by the interactive effect between N and water.•Precipitation distribution significantly affect annual N2O emissions.•Heavy precipitation increased the N threshold of N2O emissions.
