•The H1 family comprises several H1 variants/subtypes•H1 subtypes are post-translionally modified in the N- and C-terminal tails as well as within the globular domain•H1 modifications with a known function include: phosphorylation, methylation, acetylation, citrullination and ADP-ribosylation•Novel H1 subtypes specific modification sites and types have been identified by mass spectrometry•Post-translational modifications of H1 subtypes can modulate H1 functions
