An examination of the handheld adapter approach for measuring hand-transmitted vibration exposure

•This study examined the handheld adapter approach for measuring vibration exposure.•The results confirm many handheld adapters can produce large measurement errors.•Their major error sources and mechanisms are identified and explained.•Some methods for improving adapter design and applications are proposed.•The glove-held palm adapters are identified as better adapters for vibration measurement.
