•Proposed a segmentation framework for images on the sphere, for the first time.•It is compatible with any type of spherical wavelets.•It is efficient and flexible for any type of spherical images.•Devised a new hybrid directional-curvelet wavelet construction on the sphere.•Numerical results with a series of applications are presented.
