In-field cotton detection via region-based semantic image segmentation

•A region-based semantic segmentation method is employed for in-field cotton detection.•We use superpixels to generate region for edge-preserving and structural integrity.•The cotton’s boll opening stage can be predicted automatically.•We have established a cotton detection dataset containing two perspectives of observation.
