Fast Snr And Rate Control For Jpeg Xr

This paper addresses fast quality (in terms of SNR) and rate control for JPEG XR. Our proposed quality control algorithm picks the right quantization parameter based on the target SNR while taking into account low-activity and blank macroblocks. The rate control algorithm relies on a linear relationship between the compression ratio and the quantization parameter. JPEG XR in conjunction with our quality control scheme gives better performance at lower complexity than the commercial software licensed by Shell for seismic image compression. Our work is currently adopted by Shell for wide use.
