An extensible text-to-html translator

An extensible translator from text to HTML called t2h is described and its utility is illustrated. t2h takes text files that contain clues as to how the text is to be formatted and translates such files into HTML. There are several aspects novel to the approach taken here. The input must satisfy a grammar and therefore is well-formed. Formatting clues within a line are pre-processed by the front-end script. The system is extensible in the sense that users can provide external scripts for formatting situations not anticipated by the tool. These features support the generation of web pages in a variety of ways and can save time creating websites primarily aimed at the dissemination of information, as is the case when producing web pages for classes.
