Ontogenesis of the pinealo-retinal neuronal connection in albino rats.

•Nerve cell bodies in the pineal body were observed in prepubertal rats but not in adults.•The nerve cells of the pineal body established a transsynaptic connection with the retina.•Disappearance of the nerve cells during the prepubertal period is due to an apoptotic mechanism.
