Career aspirations, perceived instrumentality, and achievement in undergraduate computer science courses

•Career aspirations and perceived instrumentality changed during the semester.•Changes were greater for students not majoring in the field of the examined course.•Most of the change in perceived instrumentality occurred early in the semester.•Change in career aspirations predicted change in perceived instrumentality.•Aspirations and instrumentality moderately predicted some aspects of achievement.
