•We improve the diameters of CISTs in locally twisted cubes LTQn.•We show that LTQ4 admits two CISTs with diameter 6.•We show that LTQn admits two CISTs with diameter 2n−3 for n⩾5.•The construction of CISTs for LTQ4 is optimal.
