•The plasma level of CXCL10 was higher in AA patients than in healthy controls.•Increased CXCL10 was closely associated with the clinical characteristics of AA.•CXCL10 affected the production of IFN-γ and IL-17 in CD4+ T cells in AA patients.•CXCL10 was involved in CD4+ T cell differentiation in AA patients and controls.
