Legionella contamination in warm water systems: A species-level survey.

•First species-level survey of a large geographic area for legionellae in drinking water.•Abundance and spread of Legionella spp. are not homogenous in the considered geographical region.•Non-pneumophila species account for up to 42% of Legionella contaminations regionally.•Species abundance in water samples is similar to species distribution of reported clinical cases.•Water temperature has disparate influence on the presence of individual species.
