A novel genotype VII Newcastle disease virus vaccine candidate generated by mutation in the L and F genes confers improved protection in chickens.

•Genetic and antigenic variation exists between genotype VII NDV and vaccine strains.•A novel genotype VII-matched vaccine strain, G7M, was generated by reverse genetics.•G7M induces a stronger cell-mediated immune response than LaSota in chickens.•G7M blocks viral shedding and provides full protection to chickens.
