Differential prevalence and demographic and clinical correlates of antidepressant use in American bipolar I versus bipolar II disorder patients.

•We assessed correlates of antidepressant use in 503 bipolar I/II disorder patients.•Antidepressant use was 39.0%, overall, and was higher in BD II versus BD I p = 0.0002).•Antidepressant use in BD II versus BD I was higher when euthymic and subsyndromal.•Correlates of antidepressant use differed more than overlapped in BD I versus BD II.
