•Visuo-spatial complexity and action affordances during motor imagery (MI).•MI including real objects shows increased neural activity indicating the saliency of action affordances.•Higher visuo-spatial complexity in MI leads to enhanced fronto-parietal activation.•Our results indicate the significant role of visuo-spatial cognition and action affordances in MI.
