•First European trial on effectiveness of a PCV against pneumonia in children.•PHiD-CV10 reduced any hospital-diagnosed pneumonia by 27%.•Reduction of pneumonia with alveolar consolidation or pleural effusion by 45%.•Vaccine-preventable incidence of pneumonia considerable for a high-income setting.•We used vaccine as a probe to estimate disease burden.
