The liver surface as a favorable site for islet cell sheet transplantation in type 1 diabetes model mice

•We successfully transplanted islet cell sheets onto the liver surface in diabetic mice.•The liver surface as the transplantation site for islet cell sheets was more effective than subcutaneous space.•Vascularized neo-islet tissues were formed on the liver surface.
