Performance and sleepiness in nurses working 12-h day shifts or night shifts in a community hospital.

•Night shift workers had decreased reaction times and increased performance lapses.•Day shift workers experienced no significant changes in performance.•Day and night shift workers had equivalent mean daily sleep duration (7.1h).•Changes in policies and practices may be warranted for patient and worker safety.
