•No automated serological assay is validated for HEV diagnosis.•The performance of the VIDAS® ANTI-HEV IgG and IgM assays were evaluated.•We evaluated the VIDAS® assay by testing immunocompetent and immunocompromised patients.•The VIDAS HEV assays are suitable for the diagnosis of acute HEV infection.
