•Primiparous animals exhibited more on-task responses in the Dry Land Maze probe trial.•Primiparous rats responded to the uncertain probe trial with higher DHEA/corticosterone metabolites.•Nulliparous rats had higher glucocorticoid receptor- and lower BDNF-positive cells in the hippocampus.•In general, the primiparous females exhibited more efficient stress responses than nulliparous females.
