An Analysis on Transient Thermal Performance of Fin - Tube Heat Exchanger under a Frosting Condition

This work presents an e-NTU method to predict the thermal performance of a fin-tube heat exchanger under frosting condition. In this method, the fin-tube heat exchanger with a single tube was chosen as a unit of the analysis and the tube-by-tube method was used to analyze the overall performance of the heat exchanger. The total heat transfer coefficient of air side and effective thermal conductivity of the frost layer were defined as a function of the temperature of the frost surface. The effective specific heat of air by considering the effect of latent heat was also defined. The surface temperature of the frost layer formed on the heat exchanger was calculated through the analysis of the heat and mass transfer process in the air and frost layer. To examine the validity of this analytical model, the computed results from the present model, such as heat transfer rate and frost mass, were compared with those from experiments and the LMED method.
