The distribution and origin of lunar light plains around Orientale basin

•We mapped the lunar light plains within a study area outside the Orientale basin.•We assessed the distribution, composition, and ages of the light plains.•Distribution and composition are consistent with an impact origin.•Ages are consistent with the age of the Orientale basin.•Most light plains in the study region likely formed as a result of the Orientale event.
