Effective local stress intensity factor criterion for prediction of crack growth trajectory under mixed mode fracture conditions

•The proposed criterion considers material properties in crack growth direction.•A material-dependent effective local SIF is defined as a main fracture parameter.•The ratios of shear strength to tensile one in various materials are considered.•The predicted results are in a good agreement with the experimental ones.
