•High dispersion of Pt on metal oxides and carbon by charge enhanced dry impregnation.•Salts added to the CEDI recipe give a simple method to control Pt particle size.•The sensitivity of various supports to salt-induced sintering is demonstrated.•Particle size characterization by XRD, chemisorption and STEM is consistent.
