In patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention, age, female gender, acute coronary syndromes, diabetes, impaired renal function and peripheral vascular disease are risk factors indicating a high procedural risk and a poor long-term outcome. Strategies for minimizing risks and optimizing outcomes are discussed.
